Dance is taught at Farringtons all Year 7 and Year 8 students. Dance is an option for Year 9 students as part of the Arts Carousel. Progressing into Key Stage 4 Students pursue Dance GCSE. We are also pleased to support the Dance element of the curriculum within the Junior School.

At all levels, Dance encourages students to use their creativity through choreography, whilst reflecting on their own work, and the work of others, through appreciation tasks. Students develop their physical skills (balance, control, coordination) through performing challenging, and invigorating movement sequences, which are inspired by a relevant topic.  Group work is a key element in the Dance curriculum, giving students the opportunity for expression and application of knowledge through choreography.

There are a number of performance opportunities for students who enjoy and excel in Dance, such as the Dance Show, workshops and the whole school production. Theatre trips and visits are also an integral part of students' enrichment.

Drama

Drama is an exhilarating subject taught throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, which allows pupils to develop confidence and reflect, creatively challenge, and re-imagine the world.

Students learn about the theatre while improving their own creative skills, both as actors and designers.

Developing physical and vocal acting skills, as well as experimenting with theatrical design areas such as mask work, set design, lighting, props and costume, are also key aspects of the Drama education at Farringtons.

Lessons are designed to be both fun and thought-provoking. An emphasis on lively participation and teamwork fosters the personal development of pupils.

GCSE

The GCSE Drama course mixes practical and academic work. Essential aspects of the course are the study of play texts and visits to the theatre.

Pupils also chart the development of a piece of theatre from an initial conception to finished performance and learn about significant practitioners.

A2 Level

The A2 Level courses in Theatre Studies are concerned with the theory and practice of the theatre.

English

The English Department at Farringtons provides many extracurricular outlets for excellence and general interest, including creative writing competitions, theatre trips, residential writing retreats and literary tours, reading for pleasure and Public Speaking and Debating.

Pupils who require additional support in English and Literacy, usually those with specific learning needs, may be able to opt for Literacy lessons during Key Stage 3.

Pupils have the opportunity to work on their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as develop skills for effective study more generally.

These take place within the timetable and are led by a specialist teacher.

GCSE

Pupils are taught in ability groups and prepared for both Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (First Language) and English Literature.

Speaking and Listening is a constituent aspect of the current IGCSE English Language examination.

Pupils will independently prepare coursework for both IGCSEs, thus developing skills of concision and precision – essential preparation for pupils wishing to pursue their studies in English at A Level and for university study more generally.

Where students, whose first language is not English, join from overseas in Year 9 or 10, they may be entered for Edexcel IGCSE English Second Language, either instead of the dual award or, in some cases, in addition to this.

AS/A Level

We follow the Edexcel English Literature syllabus.

This course enables students to become confident, reflective and independent readers and writers.

They will be able to consider the content of works, themes, styles and techniques and the approaches of different authors, and confidently make considered original comparisons.

Success at A Level depends very much on a student’s ability to work independently by reading, researching and writing, and these skills are developed throughout the course.

Food and Nutrition

In today’s world, it is essential that children understand the importance of good nutrition and how having a well-balanced and nutritious diet is important for staying healthy.

KS3

In Years 7 and 8, pupils learn about topics such as food safety and the importance of hygiene, how to organise and use a kitchen safely, balanced diets, nutrients and methods of preparing and cooking food.
These skills are then developed further in Year 9, where the aim is to have instilled a passion for cooking.

GCSE

Farringtons offers GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition. This is a popular option amongst pupils who enjoy cooking and food-related issues.

Building upon the skills developed in the previous years, the course is designed to enable pupils to investigate the relationship between nutrition, food choice and health, as well as food science and food provenance.

They will examine the functions of ingredients and develop the cooking skills needed to make healthy choices throughout their lives.

These aspects are studied within the context of British and International cuisine.

Mathematics

At Farringtons, we encourage pupils to learn how to use Mathematics, not only for practical or academic purposes, but also to develop an appreciation of the beauty of logic and symmetry and the pleasure of problem-solving.

The skills gained in studying Mathematics can be applied in a multitude of other areas, ranging from sociology and medicine to economics and architecture.

The training of the mind that the subject encourages is particularly sought after by employers. In their first year in the Senior School, every pupil is placed in a set according to their needs and ability. A caring environment, with a flexible setting, ensures that our pupils can build up confidence and become encouraged by their success.

GCSE

All pupils study Mathematics to Year 11 and follow either the Higher or Foundation tier Edexcel iGCSE course.

We have a select few students each year who sit the Statistics GCSE and Additional Mathematics qualification. These are both invite only and studied as an after-school club.

A Level

In the Sixth Form, Mathematics is a popular choice, allowing students to study Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.

We also offer Further Mathematics. This is a demanding yet popular choice which counts as an additional A Level.

Through the study of Mathematics, students learn how to engage with more complex and abstract ideas, honing their problem-solving skills. In turn, this develops the ability and confidence to adapt and approach new types of problems.

Modern Foreign Languages

In the contemporary world, knowledge of a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) is a valuable skill to possess, not only for developing confidence and learning about another culture, but also to provide the potential to increase a pupil’s employability.

At Farringtons, all pupils have the opportunity to experience at least one popular European language.

French, our compulsory MFL, is taught from Year 7. Students have the option to study a further language - either Spanish or German - from Year 8.

Teachers encourage pupils to use their language skills widely and learn about the customs of the country through literature, music and foreign cinematography.  Pupils also benefit from overseas trips each year, which further develop a real interest for their chosen language and culture.

Talented linguists, who really find a passion for languages, enjoy the option to study more than one language at A Level.

Speaking another language provides a window to different cultures and customs and helps you communicate with other humans. It also improves your grasp of English, enhances your confidence and gives you a wider understanding of world affairs, whilst enabling you to travel and make new friends. Linguists are in demand with employers and recruitment agencies.

This is why, at Farringtons School, we recognise and embrace the importance of learning different languages such as French, German or Spanish.

French

French is an important, vibrant language spoken by more than 128 million speakers in around 33 countries across the world.

At Farringtons School, we aim for all our students to achieve both a good working knowledge of the language and an awareness and appreciation of the huge cultural, social and historical diversity and heritage of French-speaking nations.

French is offered to all students in Year 7, to be taken alongside Spanish or German in Year 8 and continued until the end of Year 9.

In Key Stage 4, students have the choice of studying the AQA GCSE course. In the Sixth Form, students will follow the 2-year AQA A Level course.

At Farringtons, it is our aim to foster a passion for languages and we organise regular extra-curricular trips, clubs and activities to achieve this.

An important aim is for students to gain confidence and learn about culture, customs and traditions in Spain and Latin America.

In the Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to continue Spanish to A Level.

The Department organises trips to Spain, which have proved popular and beneficial, as well as special outings and in-house activities.

Music

Key Stage 3

At Farringtons School, we have a heavy emphasis on performance through singing, both in groups and individually.

All pupils perform in our concerts and other whole school events, such as the carol service.

As well as this, we would like all pupils to be able to read, write and perform their own music using the stimuli of the Scheme of Work.

In Years 7 to 9, pupils receive a music experience that covers the basics of notation, composition and performance, both singing and using the keyboard.

We use Sound Trap, a Digital Audio Workstation cloud-based programme, together with a suite of 15 computers using the Sibelius music notation software.

We actively encourage the use of other instruments within class lessons if a pupil is able to do so.

All pupils are encouraged to take individual singing or instrumental lessons through Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT).

GCSE

We use the OCR GCSE syllabus.

Students learn skills in listening and appraising as well as performance. Students' performances are recorded every half term.

They are expected to take a full part in the musical life of the School by performing in our regular concerts and shows.

A Level

The A Level Music course extends the GCSE skills of performing, composing and listening, in ways which emphasise their interdependence.

Both GCSE and A level students are expected to be receiving vocal or instrumental tuition, whether inside or outside of School, and to practise regularly, as well as take part in our concerts and shows.

Photography

At Farringtons, Photography is offered as a subject choice at A Level.

A knowledge of photography or previous art and design-based qualification is preferred. A passion for lens-based media is required, as well as the ability to be organised and committed to independent study.

The course is studied over two years, the first being dedicated to skills development, the second to building a body of coursework in line with the OCR course specification.

Our subject specialist, Mr Matthews, teaches photography. He is a professional practitioner experienced in both contemporary and historical techniques.

The course is designed to not only challenge students to achieve the best they can, but to bridge the gap between ALevel and first year degree study.

Students will leave with a sound understanding of the level of study expected at university and be able to read, analyse and contextualise degree level critical theory.

Classical techniques such as film development, medium format and large format can all be explored using our dedicated dark room. Contemporary techniques and skills can be developed using our studio equipment and Apple Macs dedicated to run the Adobe Creative Suite.

A Level

The OCR Art and Design, specialising in Photography, syllabus is studied.

Year 12

A portfolio of work is developed and students are able to critically analyse and contextualise photographs as well as photographic critical theory.
Elements of art history are incorporated and students are encouraged to explore moving images, Gifs, animation and video as well as stills.

Year 13

The A2 Course offers students the opportunity to further develop their area of interest, focus their studies and become specialists in their fields.

Physical Education

At Farringtons, the Physical Education Department is committed to creating a positive learning experience, building confidence, improving fitness and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

We pride ourselves on making Physical Education accessible to all pupils, regardless of ability, encouraging full participation in lessons and providing a variety of extracurricular sporting opportunities.

There are a wide range of extracurricular activities to suit all interests, enabling every pupil to reach their potential in their chosen sport. These clubs take place before school, in the lunch hour and after school. They provide opportunities for skills taught in lessons to be consolidated and developed.

At Farringtons, we believe that competition is important. Pupils should learn through sport how to react to different situations, both positive and negative, allowing for each individual to build resilience. We allow students to access all levels of competition, from countrywide competitions through to inter-house school events.

The school competes in inter-school competitions, which include girls’ and boys’ football, netball, rugby, cross country, swimming, futsal, basketball, athletics, cricket and tennis. The department also maintains a flexibility to allow for pupils who show an interest in any sport to compete at an inter-school level.

Each week, all students in Key Stage 3 have two periods of Physical Education, which focus on the individual activities of swimming, gymnastics, sport-specific fitness, trampolining and ball skills. They also have a triple games session where they participate in team sports, which include football, rugby and cricket for the boys and netball, football and rounders for the girls.

In Key Stages 4 and 5, pupils are offered a double games session where they can continue to develop within their team sports or explore other sporting interests, both within and outside of  School.

Psychology

Psychology is an academic subject concerned with the study of the mind and human behaviour. It is available to Sixth Form students at Farringtons.

If a student has an interest in learning and debating explanations of human development and human behaviour, then Psychology is the perfect choice.

AS/A Level

Students following this course will gain an insight into understanding human similarity and human difference. They will learn to analyse and evaluate scientific research and develop their critical thinking skills.

The department takes advantage of expert lectures given by London universities and hospitals when  available to school students. For example, students have previously attended an expert lecture given by Sir Richard Bowlby at Orpington College.

Religious Studies

At Farringtons, Religious Studies is a compulsory subject for all students in Years 7 to 9. It offers pupils the opportunity to explore the diverse beliefs, ethics and opinions which exist in the world today. Its aim is to develop understanding and hence promote tolerance of the religious traditions and practices which have shaped our world and continue to be of relevance today.

GCSE

In the first two years of Senior School, pupils study the six major world religions.

Christianity, Islam and Judaism in Year 7 and Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism in Year 8.

This provides a foundation of knowledge for pupils to progress onto the GCSE course.

In Year 9, pupils begin the GCSE course with a study of Christianity.

AS/A Level

During AS and A Level, students study the 'Philosophy of Religion' and 'Religious Ethics', which are taught and examined as two distinct topics. The course itself is demanding, but most importantly stimulating, enjoyable and rewarding.

Science

Science is about asking ‘Why?’ and then finding out the answers.

Questions range from those which involve life, chemical elements and particles as small and fundamental as quarks, to those that encompass the whole universe: its birth, evolution and eventual fate.

Science encourages pupils to develop many essential skills, such as investigative skills, planning and evaluation, accurate observation and recording, and concise writing.

At Farringtons, all Sciences are taught by subject specialist teachers and we have five excellent, fully equipped laboratories.

In Years 7 and 8, all pupils study an integrated Key Stage 3 Science course which broadly follows the National Curriculum. Topics are selected to provide a sound foundation for IGCSE Sciences and enable an easier transition to Key Stage 4.

GCSE

Pupils begin Key Stage 4 topics in Year 9 and then, in Year 10, take either AQA GCSE Combined Science (two GCSE grades) or AQA GCSE Separate Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics (three GCSE grades).

The Combined Science and Separate Sciences are designed to be interesting and inspiring modern Science qualifications. The Separate Science qualification is designed for more able students who are considering taking their Science studies further than GCSE level, to A-level and beyond.

The courses give students the opportunity to experience Science within the context of their general education and provide a basis for further study in GCE Advanced Level Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics.

AS/A Level

At A Level, all three sciences are popular.

The A Level course is a two-year linear course with an option to take an AS level after one year.
All students carry out practical work which is examined in the theory papers. This practical work is an essential component of the A Level and is required in order for students to pass the Practical Endorsement.

Textiles

Textiles promotes creativity and the development of expressive conceptual ideas using a variety of materials and techniques.

Key Stage 4

At Farringtons, we offer an AQA Art and Design Textiles GCSE.

Students select a topic that they develop through the four assessment objectives. They use research, experimentation and the recording of ideas to inform an outcome or product.

Students facilitate gallery visits and catwalk shows to assist them in developing their studies.Development and experimentation are important tools in the students’ progress.
