Ukraine Report

Ukraine 2016

Unexpected, Unbelievable, Unmissable!’

In July 2016, Farringtons School set off once again to the far away land that is the Ukraine. Taking a total of 19 pupils, past and present, the journey began.

Students returning were buoyant, those visiting for the first time, understandably apprehensive. The campsite, when Farringtons arrived, was awash with jubilant Ukrainian children. Seeing old friends for the first time in a year; tents were pitched, a fire was lit and the first of many songs were sung.

In the rural Ukrainian town of Makoshino, Farringtons pupils and staff alike flourished in what proved to be two life changing weeks. Pupils were emotionally and physically engaged at all times. Never did a dull moment pass.

Activities on the trip included river rafting, museum trips, rifle shooting, tours of local towns and cities and probably most importantly, educating and entertaining the Ukrainian pupils and making a difference in their lives.

New friendships were forged, old ones strengthened. Farringtons students were tested, developed new and harnessed existing skills that will do nothing but help them later in life. In wonderful and in adverse conditions, they learnt much about themselves. Preconceptions and expectations were altered, characters were made.

On a trip unlike any other, students were challenged every day to make a difference. Whether that was teaching the Ukrainian children, assisting those in the village or simply putting a smile on someone’s face. With that in mind those two weeks are truly unequalled.
