PRE-RECEPTION
Our topic this term is ‘community heroes’. In Pre-Reception we are focusing on the roles of the Year 6 pupils and how they help us in school. This week our fabulous Head Boy and Girl, Jude and Chloe, came and spoke to us about what their role involves. They also told us about who had helped them throughout their time at Farringtons. The children had lots of questions.
Phonics
In Phonics, we have been playing with sound and learning some of our new Little Wandle games. The children are learning to hear the phoneme ‘s’ and how to produce this clearly. We have taught them the rhyme ‘show your teeth and let the s hiss out ssss ssss’.
PSHE
Our Jigsaw PSHE ‘puzzle’ this term is ‘celebrating difference’. This week the children thought about what makes them special and unique. Next week, we will encourage the children to think about the things that they are good at.
Maths
In Maths, we will start to learn about the number ‘1’. We will begin to subitise (say how many without counting), use 1:1 correspondence (assigning one number to each object as you count) and work on recognising the numeral (how the number is written).
RECEPTION
This week we introduced our new topic ‘community heroes’ Where we will be learning about the people who help us within our community.
Literacy
We started the week by sharing the homework set over the half term. The children stood in front of the class and talked about people in the community they had researched and how they help us. Linked to our topic we explored the roles of Police Officers in more detail. On Friday we were extremely lucky to meet two Police Officers. They came into class and talked all about their jobs. They brought in clothing for us to try on and showed us some of the equipment they use.
Maths
In Maths, we continued with the module ‘it’s me, 1,2,3’. This week we focused on the composition of number, one more and one less. We used the ‘concrete pictorial abstract’ approach. This involves using physical and visual aids to build understanding. Using counters, we explored different ways of making 3, we then practised writing this as number sentences.
Phonics
This week we learnt the phonemes ‘ff, ll, ss and j’. In class we practised saying the sounds, blending the sounds together to read words, for example ‘m-e-ss’. We then practised letter formation by writing out the letters cursively. We also learnt the tricky words ‘pull,’ ‘full,’ ‘put’ and ‘as’. This week we started to read short captions and as an extra challenge we practised writing them.
Christmas Production
This week we started rehearsals for our Christmas nativity.
