PRE-RECEPTION
We have had a very busy week in Pre-Reception! The children performed their nativity to the rest of the school. We are looking forward to welcoming parents to watch the show next week.
We have been baking banana muffins and enjoyed sharing these at snack time.
Maths
In Maths, we have been working on simple two-step and three-step repeating patterns (colour, size, shape, sound and movement).
Phonics
In Phonics, we have taught the children to recognise the ‘i’ phoneme (sound) and to pronounce this correctly.
RECEPTION
It been an eventful week in Reception.
Literacy
Continuing with our topic ‘Community Heroes’ we have been exploring the role of a post person. Linked to our topic the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the book ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
We started the week by looking at the structure of a letter and writing letters to Santa. Later in the week we walked to the post box to post them off. During the week we were really surprised to receive a package and letter from the Jolly Postman. He wanted our help to solve the mystery of who the parcel was for. We then individually wrote back to the postman telling him who we thought the parcel was for.
Maths
This week we explored rectangles and squares. We introduced the properties of the shapes, recognising that both rectangles and squares have 4 straight sides and 4 corners. We learnt that squares are a special kind of rectangle, where each of the 4 sides are equal in length. We also started to explore time. We began to distinguish and talk about the difference between the key events in our daily routine. We compared what happens during the day to what happens at night. We encouraged the children to use language such as ‘first’, ‘then’, ‘after’, ‘before’, ‘day’, ‘night’, ‘morning’, ‘afternoon’, ‘today’ and ‘tomorrow’ to describe different events.
Phonics
Ahead of next weeks phonic assessment we revisited all the phonemes and tricky words we have learnt so far by practising writing words and sentences, focusing on digraphs and making sure we could scan words when reading and identifying them. This week we learnt the tricky words ‘we,’ ‘me,’ and ‘be.’
