What Early Years got up to this week

Early Years Playground

PRE-RECEPTION

This week, we have been learning more about spring.  The children have learnt that the weather in spring is changeable and that we can experience warm, cold, sun and rain all in one day.  We have been growing bulbs and seeds. Additionally, we have been looking at changes in the environment and hunting for signs of spring.  It has been lovely spending time outside in the warmer weather. We are watching carefully to see when the bluebells start to flower.

PHONICS

In Phonics, we have learnt how to pronounce the sound ‘f’. To illustrate, we have taught the children the rhyme ‘Open your lips a little; put your teeth on your bottom lip and push the air out to make the sound fffff.’ Next week, in Phonics, we will learn how to pronounce the sound ‘l’.

MATHS

In Maths, we have explored capacity through the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.  We have learnt the mathematical vocabulary: full/empty, half-full/empty, nearly-full/empty. Following this, next week we will be looking at sequencing. The children will be sequencing familiar routines and nursery rhymes.

PSHE

Finally, in our Jigsaw PSHE lesson we learnt about the importance of washing hands properly with soap and water both before eating and after going to the toilet.

RECEPTION

We have another fun and interesting week in Reception.

Understanding the World

This week we have been exploring ‘how we stay healthy.’ We learnt that you need a balanced diet, exercise, to keep ourselves clean, to talk about our feelings and to dress appropriately, to keep ourselves healthy.

Literacy

In Literacy we thought about our learning this week and recorded sentences in our literacy book on how to stay healthy. Throughout the week we also completed different ‘staying healthy’ tasks.

Phonics

This week, we focused on longer words, words ending in –ing  and compound words. Additionally, in class we have been practising read and writing sentences, for example ‘It is fun chatting and singing in the rooftop garden.’ We have also revisited tricky words from phase 2 and 3.

Maths

In Maths we have started a new block exploring shape. We have been learning the names and properties of 3D shapes. Also, we have also been revisiting our learning in the block ‘building 9 and 10,’ by exploring true and false statements.

PSED

Finally, we started our new jigsaw unit ‘healthy me’. This unit focuses on being and keeping safe and healthy. For instance, we talked about our bedtime routine and what we do to relax before we go to bed.
