PRE-RECEPTION
Literacy
For our Literacy sessions this week, we have read the book ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper. In the book, the characters make pumpkin soup, so our Catering Team kindly agreed to do the same! The children went over to the kitchen and Glen, one of our chefs, demonstrated how to make soup. The children all enjoyed watching him chop and whisk the ingredients. All the children were encouraged to try the pumpkin soup and say if they enjoyed it or not!
We have also listened to the story ‘The Frog Prince’. The children have enjoyed acting out the story and experimenting with different objects that might float or sink. They decided, as a group, that the princess would have been better using a coconut, rather than a golden ball that sank.
Phonics
In phonics this week, we have been matching initial sounds of objects to our own names initial sound.
Maths
In Maths this week we have grouped objects by sizes, colours and shapes. We also grouped objects that float and objects that sink.
Reception
Literacy
This week we have been learning all about Diwali and how people celebrate it. We read and acted out the story of ‘Rama and Sita’ and introduced new vocabulary that the children used during their imaginative play.
Expressive Arts and Design
We have been busy this week creating beautiful Rangoli and Mehendi patterns linked to our learning about Diwali. We also used clay to mould and create Diwali lamps.
Phonics
This week we learnt the phonemes ‘h, b, f and i’, In class we practised saying the sounds, blending the sounds together to read words, for example ‘l-u-ck’. We then practised letter formation by writing out the letters cursively. We also learnt the tricky word ‘the’. Tricky words are words that cannot be easily decoded (sounded out and read).
