CPR training

CPR TRAINING

I decided it was essential for the Sixth Form to learn CPR after an emergency accident that I encountered. I was on my way home from a party when I found myself performing CPR to a man that had been hit by a car. At the time, adrenaline kicked in and the first aid training from Gold Duke of Edinburgh that I never thought would be put into use, was deemed crucial. Unfortunately, after the ambulance, police and air ambulance arrived, they were unable to save him. Even though this was not the outcome I wished for, it made me realise how essential these life skills were. As a result, I asked South East Kent Ambulance Service to teach the Sixth Form how to perform CPR, so they are never in a position where they are unprepared. As much as I hope none of my classmates experience an event like that, I am also confident in their ability to know what to do to potentially save a life now.

ESU and MACE TeamORACY SUCCESS

A truly great term for our young orators began with a visit to Eltham College for the second round of the ESU School’s Mace. Here, as proposition for ‘This house would introduce a tax on fatty foods’, Ishan, Titus and Alisha wiped the floor with all of the competition, a select band of five schools consisting of all our prestigious neighbours.  This was most satisfying and a testament to the intellectual talent we are fortunate enough to nurture at Farringtons and sees our team into the Regional Final.

Next, we journeyed to Dunraven School in Streatham where the competition in the second round of the ESU Churchill Public Speaking was red hot! Our Year 9s – Sammed, Jayden and main speaker, Harry – put up a great fight really showing that the future or public speaking at Farringtons is in safe hands. Our A team, Sanu (chair), Ishan (questioner) and Keira (main speaker) qualified with ease and grace for the Regional finals to be held at Dartmouth House. Thank you to Mrs Vail for her expertise with the main speakers and good luck to our team in the next round!

Our final engagement was in Richmond at Ibstock Place School. Here over forty teams competed in the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition. Teams in this BP-style format which replicates the style of parliamentary debate, something new to us, were drawn from all the greatest and the good of the South of England and our two teams (Alisha, Tara, Timofey and Giles) each took part in two debates and performed with confidence and flair.

Well done to all concerned this week – you are a great credit to Farringtons.

Mrs Denman, Head of Debating

Sixth Form dinner

sixth form dinner

On 31st January, the Sixth Form and Form Tutors sat down together after school for a memorable dinner in the dining hall, as a reward for their excellent start to the year, making sure that their efforts and commitments were and are continuously recognised. It was definitely a night to remember, filled with laughter, joy and simply a lively atmosphere altogether. We wanted to thank the catering staff for all of their efforts and hard work preparing such a well organised event, with a three-course meal, that I am sure we can all agree was delicious! Furthermore, everyone also enjoyed taking part in the Heads or Tails game and in the After Eight Challenge, which was initiated by Mr Jackson as a pass time activity in between the meals, which created a fun environment for all the students and teachers.

SCIENCE LIVE

On Friday 7th February thirty of our Year 10 pupils attended GCSE Science Live at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London. The pupils heard from some of the country’s top scientists who are all working at the cutting edge of their specialisms. From Professor Robert Winston’s lecture on the wonders of cell biology through to Professor Jim Al-Khalili’s lecture on the possibility of time travel, the pupils were exposed to the broad interdisciplinary nature of science. Coupled with more nuanced lectures from Dr Helen Czerski and Professor Andrea Sela on ocean science and chemical equilibrium respectively, the pupils witnessed first-hand how the study of science in secondary school can lead to a wide array of specialist areas of research in later life. The lectures were interspersed with two short talks from an experienced examiner who offered top tips on examination success; reiterating the good practice endorsed within lessons. We hope that the event generated an even greater enthusiasm for science and showed our pupils that science really does offer solutions for many of the world’s greatest problems. The opportunity to listen to some of our country’s best scientists in one of our country’s most impressive theatres truly was an excellent outing. The pupils acquitted themselves brilliantly throughout and it was a pleasure to have their company. We look forward to visiting once again next academic year.

Mr Foster, Head of Science

LEGALLY BLONDE

Wow! The Senior School production of Legally Blonde left audiences thoroughly impressed. Stunning sets, vibrant costumes and well-crafted props enhanced the overall experience. However, the true magic came from the enthusiastic performances of the cast—more than 50 talented pupils brought the story to life. Under the expert direction of Miss Warburton and the incredible staff of the Performing Arts Department, this production was a shining example of what talent, dedication and rehearsal can achieve.

HOUSE UPDATEs

Our Senior School pupils have enjoyed a wide array of house events this term, from the intellectual challenge of a lunchtime Jenga competition to the thrill of a racing car competition. Creative talents were showcased in the open mic competition, while strategic minds battled it out in shuffleboard. The flat pack speed challenge tested both teamwork and construction skills and even romance was in the air with a Valentine’s-themed cupid arrow archery competition.

PASSPORT CHALLENGE

We are thrilled that the Senior School Challenge Passport has been extended to Years 8 & 9!

This incredible programme encourages pupils to step outside their comfort zones, develop new skills and broaden their horizons.

chinese new year

This term has been exciting for our school as we celebrated Chinese New Year. The whole school enjoyed a delicious Chinese lunch prepared by our fantastic Catering Team—huge thanks to them! There was also a presentation in the Chapel, where Jason (Year 12) and I, shared insights into the traditions and origins of Chinese New Year.

The Prep School also joined in the festivities! Throughout the day, each year group from Pre-Reception to Year 6 participated in the Chinese New Year celebration workshops. Pre-Reception to Year 4 learnt about the traditions of Chinese New Year and greetings in Mandarin, while Year 5 and 6 explored Chinese traditional arts such as calligraphy, paper cutting and other cultural activities.

A special thank you to Mrs Cheng for organising and leading these wonderful sessions!
