It was wonderful to see all of the children in their array of costumes, dressed up as characters from various books and novels. We were really privileged to have the author Janice Akhtar spend the day with the children. She led a series of interactive and engaging workshops and shared her passion for literature and language with them. The level of imagination that went into the children’s ‘Story Jars’ was also hugely impressive and the exhibition display was truly inspiring. The Senior School welcomed the highly regarded guest speaker and ex-police officer Dave Parvin this term to talk with pupils about drug awareness. It was great for pupils to have clear, up-to-date and authentic information from one of the UK experts.
In addition to talking about recreational drug use and addiction, Dave explored the health risks associated with vaping which presents a significant challenge for adolescents at the moment.
We have had a bumper term on the Oracy front with over 35 pupils taking part in no less than seven competitions against other schools including three regional competitions. This is not counting the pupils who took part in the Bromley Festival – a first for us – and what a success that was with 16 pupils entering across 14 different classes and scooping a whole bunch of medals along with some impressive silverware. Added to this our weekly Junior Debate Club has really taken off. We are now eagerly anticipating our inaugural House Debating competition in the Summer Term.

Congratulations to everyone who entered artwork for the Royal Academy of Art Young Artists’ Summer Show. The pictures showcased the fantastic talent of our pupils and the Art Department.
Fingers crossed as we wait to see if any of the entries are shortlisted for the exhibition!
A group of forty pupils and four staff, attended the Move It Dance exhibition at the Excel Centre on Friday 7th March. Whilst there, we were wowed by the talent on display. We watched a range of performances in a range of styles and took part in a number of different workshops in small groups, including musical theatre and acro. Some pupils even got to meet Abby Lee of Dance Mom’s fame! In the afternoon, the Farringtons dancers came together and took part in a Diversity workshop, where we applied our dynamic variation in the fast, street dance sequence. The workshop ended with us performing in front of some of the original Diversity dancers, Ashley Banjo, Jordan and Perry. It was wonderful for the pupils to develop their talent through being immersed in such a varied day of Dance. We are now looking forward to showcasing the pupils’ talents at the Dance Show on Thursday 8th May 6pm in Ferens Hall.
One pupil commented “I enjoyed making the croque monsieur because its different to our usual homework and we get to do something more interactive. The way to make a croque monsieur is first you add the cheese and ham on the bread along with the bechamel sauce. You then add bechamel sauce and cheese on top and grill it. Mine tasted brilliant. it was super yummy or in French miam miam. Altogether this was a fantastic homework, and I hope to do something like this again.” Hamish, Year 7
The Medical Society has had an incredibly successful term, with high engagement from students in Years 11, 12, and 13. Our sessions have been packed with insightful discussions, practical assessments, and valuable preparation for medical school applications.
One of the key areas of focus this term was ethical debates. These discussions allowed students to explore complex moral dilemmas that doctors and healthcare professionals encounter in their careers. Topics included patient autonomy versus medical paternalism, the ethics of resource allocation in healthcare, and the implications of genetic engineering. Through these debates, students developed their critical thinking skills, learned to consider multiple perspectives, and enhanced their ability to articulate well-reasoned arguments—an essential skill for future medical professionals.
In addition to ethical debates, we dedicated time to UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) assessments. Students had the opportunity to work through practice questions, understand the different sections of the exam, and develop strategies to approach challenging scenarios. We focused on key areas such as verbal reasoning, decision-making, and situational judgment, ensuring that students felt more confident and prepared for this crucial component of medical school applications.
Understanding medical school entry requirements was another crucial part of our programme. We provided detailed guidance on the different pathways into medicine, university-specific requirements, and the importance of personal statements and work experience. Students gained a clearer understanding of what admissions tutors are looking for and how to enhance their applications.
One of the highlights of the term was our series of mock Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) sessions. These sessions simulated the real-life interview process used by medical schools, allowing students to experience a range of challenging scenarios. Stations included role-playing patient interactions, ethical dilemmas, problem-solving tasks, and teamwork assessments. Through these mock MMIs, pupils developed confidence, improved their communication skills, and received constructive feedback on their performance.
Overall, the Medical Society has provided an invaluable platform for aspiring medical students to refine their skills, broaden their understanding of medical ethics, and prepare thoroughly for their future careers. We look forward to continuing our work next term with even more engaging activities and opportunities for our members!

Farringtons’ representation at the first weekend of the Bromley Festival of Speech and Drama was impressive on Saturday. Sammed, Raffel and Alisha all came away with gold medals (Alisha with two!) and Sanujana, Joseph, Eva, Florence, Ethan all achieved silver (Ethan two). Special congratulations to Raffel who won the Nola & John Small Cup for performing the poem he had created, the haunting ‘Winter’s Grip’. The judge commended the quality of the public speaking in particular and said it was the highest standard she had ever seen! Well done to all and good luck to all of our pupils in the second weekend of the competition.
After significant successes in the first weekend of the Bromley Festival, we hardly dared to hope for more but they just kept coming!

Lucy kept the pupils engaged with her description of life in the Creative Arts industry and stories from the publishing world. Students enjoyed hearing about how Lucy was inspired in her writing by the places she had visited and Lucy shared ideas for developing creative writing skills.
“The talk was good and I found it interesting. I like the thought of using art pictures and mood boards to help with ideas and taking walks for inspiration.” Year 10
“Lucy engaged us with her story making, her enjoyment of books and the ideas we could try.” Year 9
“I thought it was an intriguing presentation, sharing a variety of methods and we could engage with the activity showing how you could create your own ideas. It shows how all experiences can help in a career.” Year 10
As the days grow longer and sunnier DofE steps up a gear into Expedition season.
So far this year the Year 9’s have been working on their self-led sections of volunteering, physical and skills, developing in these areas towards their personal goals. They have also all completed their Floreat Outdoor Skills Training Programme which prepares them for their up-and-coming expeditions next term. As part of their training, they have learnt what is needed to fuel themselves in our food and nutrition sessions, how to read a map and complete a route card, what kit is essential for a successful expedition and gained basic first aid skills. They also learnt how to take a bearing with a compass, to navigate, and developed their campcraft skills (tent pitching and using the cooking equipment). The group were assessed on their campcraft and they put their map reading and navigation skills into practice on a Day hike around Otford and the surrounding area. They all worked well in their teams and had two successful assessments, and we are looking forward to their expeditions in May and June.
Silver and Gold participants have also been busy with their self-led sections and refreshing their training in anticipation of their expeditions. All the Gold participants are now Level 3 Outdoor First Aid Qualified, which is valid for 3 years. We are looking forward to their expeditions in the coming months also.
Can we take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have already assisted or are going to assist the DofE team, with the training and also giving up their weekends to enable these expeditions to take place. Without them we would not be able to run the award programme and enable the pupils to complete their expeditions.

In the Floreat Japanese option, Year 10 pupils have enjoyed a term of learning some beginners’ Japanese and various aspects of Japan and its culture. Among other activities, we practise introducing ourselves, learn the numbers, try to write some Hiragana characters and get an insight into the sights and life of the country’s customs and the capital city Tokyo. We also exchange pen-pal letters with a junior high school in Shizuoka prefecture. One of the most popular parts of the 12-week programme is the session in the Food Room where we learn how to roll “maki-zushi” and have the opportunity to sample our delicious creations. Well done to all the pupils past and present in Year 10 who have embraced the course with such a “ganbaru” spirit. (“Ganbaru” means “to do one’s best”).
Scowen-sensei (Mr Scowen)
On Friday, 14th March, our Year 8 pupils attended KS3 Science Live at the Emmanuel Centre in London. The event featured an exceptional line-up of renowned scientists, each delivering inspiring talks that brought science to life in an engaging and thought-provoking way.
The day began with Dr Eleonora D’Elia, who introduced pupils to the fascinating world of materials science. Using a series of live demonstrations, she showcased how different materials respond to external forces and conditions, from shape-memory alloys that return to their original form to non-Newtonian fluids that behave both as solids and liquids. Her interactive approach helped pupils understand the crucial role materials science plays in engineering, technology, and everyday life.
Next, Tobi Alegbe shared his insights into the journey from school to a career in science. His talk emphasized the wide range of opportunities available within STEM and encouraged pupils to think about how their scientific interests could shape their futures.
One of the most highly anticipated sessions of the day was delivered by Professor Lord Robert Winston, one of the UK’s most distinguished scientists, renowned for his pioneering work in fertility treatment and genetics. His talk explored the remarkable advancements in medical science, particularly in reproductive technology and genetic research. Lord Winston captivated the audience with his depth of knowledge, engaging storytelling, and thought-provoking ethical discussions about the future of medicine. The session became even more memorable when our very own Carter from Year 8 had the incredible opportunity to ask Lord Winston a question, which he answered in detail, providing fascinating insights that left a lasting impression on all in attendance.
Following this, Tomi Akingbade, a passionate science communicator, spoke about the power of curiosity and the importance of making science accessible to all. She encouraged students to ask big questions and explore science beyond the classroom.
The final speaker of the day was Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a leading space scientist and BBC presenter. She took pupils on a thrilling journey through the cosmos, discussing her work in astronomy, the latest discoveries in space exploration, and the future of human travel beyond Earth. Her infectious enthusiasm left pupils inspired and eager to learn more about the universe.
The trip was a truly enriching experience, with pupils continuing to reflect on and discuss the talks in the days that followed. The opportunity to hear from such accomplished scientists reinforced their enthusiasm for science and opened their minds to the incredible possibilities that a future in STEM could offer.

This year the ESU Eastern Region invited Farringtons to enter our pupils into their Sixth Form Public Speaking Competition, an event held online for schools in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex and – this year – us! We had three great entries – Alisha, Daisy and Imogen – whose performance in the first round was incredible. I didn’t envy the judge who had to choose between these eloquent and passionate young speakers; they chose Imogen to be Farringtons’ representative in the semi-final at the end of February.
A seasoned public speaker, Imogen romped this (or should I say Zoomed?) and on 5th March took her seat in front of the computer for the grand final. This featured speeches on topics as diverse as ‘Pain in Phantom Limbs’ and ‘Greatness’. Imogen’s charismatic style along with her humorous and beautifully structured speech ‘Science is more stimulating that the Classics’ inspired by the great scientist and classics scholar, JBS Haldane, along with her reasoned and detailed responses to questioning ensured her success. Huge congratulations to Imogen – our first grand final winner at Farringtons!
On Monday 24th March 2025, the Year 12 students visited the UCAS Discovery event, held in the Excel Centre, London. It provided us with the amazing opportunity to speak face-to-face with hundreds of experts and career advisors from across the UK.
We had a two-hour time slot, giving us the time to explore the 175 stalls; which advertised universities and colleges, apprenticeships and employers, student life, and extra information & advice. We could ask questions and get a true insight into the many options available to us after Sixth Form; whether we are considering university in the UK or abroad, an apprenticeship, or unsure of our future path, there was something for everyone.
The event was really well attended, very social and everyone seemed enthusiastic and keen to find out more about future possibilities. There were thousands of students all having acquired a variety of free tote bags and pens! A huge thank you to Ms Jackson, Mrs Miah, Mr Scowen and Mrs Allen for organising and accompanying us to the event.
Lucy Foord, Year 12
From mastering the slopes to enjoying the breath-taking Swiss scenery, our Senior School pupils had an incredible skiing experience in Gstaad last week! Filled with fresh powder, stunning views and unforgettable memories. A perfect way to spend half-term.
FOOTBALL
Huge congratulations to our Year 9 Football team! Undefeated Bromley Secondary Schools League champions! With an impressive set of performances, the team has demonstrated exceptional skill and determination on the way to the League championship. Mr Beardsmore is incredibly proud of their efforts this season.
The 1st XI Football team were crowned North Kent Division 2 Champions again for the third time with an excellent season this year, winning the majority of their games and scoring a lot of goals! Well done to all of the boys involved who have truly earned it!
NETBALL
The Year 7 Netball A Team have won the U12 Borough Tournament. This team have made excellent progress with their tactical understanding of the game and having a sound knowledge of the rules meant that they were giving away very few free and penalty passes. Player of the tournament was Ayla, who made a huge number of interceptions, showing great athleticism playing Goal Defence. All Year 7 girls have demonstrated exceptional dedication to netball this year, both during Games lessons and at netball club, and their hard work is now yielding well-deserved success.
Learning from the best! Our Senior School pupils recently had the privilege of visiting Inter Milan for a half-term football experience. They received exceptional coaching and honed their skills at one of the world’s most prestigious clubs. A truly inspiring trip!
This term, Farringtons pupils immersed themselves in a dynamic programme celebrating National Careers Week, designed to spark ambition and illuminate potential pathways.
We also held our annual Careers Speaker Event, which was our biggest yet. Eleven guest speakers from industries including media, construction, medicine, occupational therapy, sport, the civil service and accounting shared their experiences. They enjoyed giving pupils advice and valuable insight into different career paths.
Extending the career exploration journey, we welcomed Year 5 and 6 pupils from Farringtons Prep School to an event in the Chapel. This engaging session aimed to introduce younger pupils to the vast landscape of career possibilities, fostering early awareness and curiosity.
MOCK INTERVIEWS
A massive thank you to the fantastic volunteers who dedicated their time to interview our Year 12 students this term! This real-world experience is crucial for their future applications and career journeys. We appreciate your support in helping them build confidence and hone their interview skills.
We had an absolutely unforgettable evening celebrating our athletes at the annual sports awards dinner! The atmosphere was electric and the achievements were truly outstanding. Thank you to everyone who made it such a memorable night. Congratulations to all the winners!
Our Senior School has been buzzing with excitement this term, thanks to a fantastic line-up of house events! From culinary creations to strategic showdowns, there has been something for everyone.
The Sixth Form took aim and showed off their dart-throwing prowess in a thrilling competition. Precision and focus were key as they battled for dartboard dominance. Congratulations to all who participated!
The house bake off competition was a delicious success! Last week, our talented bakers put on their aprons and whipped up some yummy treats. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, and the results were simply delicious! A huge thank you to everyone who baked and tasted – it was a truly scrumptious event!
Treachery and teamwork collided as our Senior School pupils immersed themselves in a gripping Traitors Challenge. Faithfuls and traitors alike navigated a web of suspicion and strategy.
We are thrilled to announce a new boarding experience, launching in September 2025. We are developing vibrant new boarding facilities within the main school building, designed to nurture independence and foster a strong sense of community. This exciting development will see boys and girls reside in dedicated spaces, with separate bedrooms, bathrooms, and shower facilities, while sharing communal areas such as the common room and kitchen. Boarding houses will undergo a refurbishment, reflecting these innovative changes.
The ICEF Mexican and Colombian roadshows have been very positive with lots of Latin-American families interested in boarding at Farringtons. As a proud British/Colombian, Mr Palacios has particularly enjoyed engaging with agents in Bogotá. The Farringtons ethos and our success in Football were very popular in Latin-America.
A successful trip attended by Mr Palacios for the second year running. Mr Palacios met families and schools in Lagos. Farringtons was fortunate enough to sponsor sporting events in football and swimming, donating silver trophies.
This term, Farringtons Global Ambassadors collaborated with the Prep School in partaking in an online meeting with a school from Uganda to find out more about their hobbies, interests, culture and school life. The pupils asked some great questions!
Huge congratulations to our Senior and Prep School Choir for their stunning performance at Fairfield Halls this term! We are incredibly proud of your talent and hard work.
In 1925, Farringtons had the privilege of receiving a royal visit from Queen Mary, the great-grandmother of King Charles III.
